Greater Athens holds several million people, the country's money, and its densest concentration of boat owners — and the Saronic is their home water. The first group of buyers is Athenians trading up: owners with a 32-footer in Alimos or Glyfada who want the next size and would rather buy a boat already lying in Aegina or Poros than pay delivery from an island group they do not know. The second is first-time Greek buyers, often professional couples who have weekended on friends' boats for years; they view on Saturdays, bring an uncle who once owned a boat, and complete quickly when the paperwork is clean. Third are the northern Europeans who fly into Athens year-round on cheap schedules and treat the Saronic as the most reachable boat market in Greece — a Friday-to-Sunday viewing trip is practical here in a way it simply is not for the outer islands. Finally there is the trade itself: Athens-based dealers and charter operators restock from this water constantly, and a correctly priced ex-private boat with charter potential will draw their calls within days.

The the Saronic season and the selling calendar

The Saronic selling calendar runs longer than its sailing season because the buyers live an hour away. Cruising here is at its best from April to October — summer brings strong afternoon northerlies but nothing like the open Aegean's meltemi — yet viewings happen in every month of the year. A dry Saturday in January will still produce buyers on a pontoon in Aegina, because getting there costs a ferry ticket, not a flight. The rhythm still has peaks: March to May is the committed window, when buyers move to own before the season; September and October catch the season's post-mortem decisions, both from buyers who wished all summer they owned and from sellers who have decided this winter's berthing bill is their last. August is footfall without signatures. The practical advice follows the calendar — photograph in spring light, list before Easter if you can, and never take the boat off the market in winter, because the Saronic is the one region in Greece where winter viewings are routine.

Selling a boat from the Saronic: viewings, survey and handover

Selling from the Saronic is a short-distance exercise. Viewings are arranged around ferry timetables rather than flight schedules: Aegina is forty minutes from Piraeus, Poros just over an hour, and a buyer can see the boat and be home for dinner. That immediacy compresses everything — second viewings happen within the week, not the month. When a sale progresses to survey, the region's answer is the Kilada area, whose yards make lift-out, inspection and storage straightforward, though boats in the northern Saronic often survey closer to Athens where every marine trade is within reach. Hydra needs its own choreography — the harbour is small, car-free and busy, so we time viewings around the ferries and, if a survey is needed, move her the short hop to the mainland — but that distinctiveness is also why Hydra boats photograph and show better than almost anywhere. Handover is wherever the paperwork and the buyer's plans meet, often Alimos or the buyer's own berth. Throughout, one named broker runs the file: valuation, marketing, every viewing, the negotiation and the transfer, with the owner needing to appear exactly once — at the notary, or not even then with a power of attorney.

Preparing your boat to show in the Saronic

Preparation in the Saronic is about surviving proximity. Because buyers can come at short notice, the boat has to be viewing-ready as a standing condition, not a scramble: bilges dry, lockers ordered, covers on straight. The water here is busy and urban at the northern end — hull growth is fast in the warm months and a diver's clean before photography and again mid-listing is money well spent. Sun preparation matters as much as sea: gelcoat chalks quickly on boats that live afloat year-round, and a machine polish lifts a Saronic boat more visibly than almost any other spend. Interior smells decide Saronic viewings more than they should, simply because buyers see several boats in a day here and comparison is immediate; ventilate before every viewing. And because the buyer pool is local, word travels — a boat that shows badly once in Alimos is remembered. Get the paperwork folder — registration, VAT, insurance history, service receipts — photographed and indexed before the first viewing, because Greek buyers in particular will ask for it on the spot.

What selling a boat in the Saronic costs

Commission is five per cent of the sale price, payable on completion — nothing to list, nothing for marketing, nothing for viewings. Carrying costs while she sells are the Saronic's main tax: berths in the marinas nearest Athens are the most sought-after in Greece, and a boat occupying one is burning money every month she waits. That cuts two ways. It argues for honest pricing from day one — three months of wishful thinking in Alimos can cost more than the discount that would have sold her — and it sometimes argues for moving ashore: a boat hauled at Kilada keeps showing well at a fraction of the monthly cost, and the yards there make buyer access easy. What it never argues for is disappearing to a cheap berth nobody can reach; the Saronic's whole advantage is that buyers can be aboard tomorrow, and the saving that removes that advantage is no saving at all.

What sells in the Saronic

The Saronic market is the broadest in Greece because it serves the capital: everything from RIBs and weekend motorboats out of Glyfada to serious blue-water sailers provisioning for the Aegean. The depth is in three bands. Family sailing yachts from 33 to 46 feet turn over constantly — this is the default Athenian boat and the resale market prices efficiently. Motor yachts and big RIBs sell better here than anywhere else in the country, fed by owners who count hours to their island house rather than wind angles. And clean ex-charter stock moves quickly to first-time owners who want a proven boat with the awkward first depreciation already paid. Premium harbours — Hydra, Spetses — add a style market of classic and character boats that photograph like nowhere else. If there is a slow lane, it is project boats: with every marine trade in Attica an hour away, Saronic buyers pay for boats that are ready now, not boats that promise to be.

One more Saronic-specific advantage deserves its own paragraph: the after-sale market works in the seller's favour here. Because every marine trade in Greece is represented within an hour of these harbours, buyers discount less for the small jobs — a tired sprayhood or a dated chartplotter is an afternoon's errand in Athens, not a project. That keeps offers closer to asking on boats that are fundamentally sound, and it is one reason the Saronic consistently produces the smallest gap between listing price and completion price of any region we work. Sellers who understand this price the boat for her bones and let the cosmetics be the buyer's hobby; sellers who price the cosmetics in twice — once in the asking and once in the argument — stay listed longest.

Yacht Brokers in the Saronic Gulf: Frequently Asked Questions
<details>
Why does the Saronic sell boats faster than more remote regions?

Because the buyer pool is Athens: viewings happen on day trips rather than flights, so a well-priced boat simply gets seen more often.
</details><details>
My boat is laid up in a Kilada yard — is that a problem?

The opposite: Kilada's yards make surveys and handovers straightforward, and buyers of laid-up boats save a season's berthing.
</details><details>
Can buyers view a boat on Hydra?

Yes, but Hydra is car-free and ferry-timed, so viewings there take a little more choreography — the Hydra guide explains how we run them.
</details><details>
Do I need to move the boat closer to Athens to sell?

Usually not.
